WeTxt Frequently Asked Questions
-
I think I received a text message from WeTxt, but I don't understand it. What is it?
[-]
Likely, the text you received is an invite from someone you know that wants you to join a WeTxt group. If the message says something like "Hi, [some_name] wants u 2 join the txt group..." then this is probably what happened.
If you don't know who it is from, then you can ignore it for now, and see if someone you know asks you about it.
If you continue to receive messages but don't know who they are from then please report this as abuse through our Feedback Page.
If you just want to learn more about WeTxt, then read our information page.

I try to respond to a WeTxt message, but I get a response about an alias. What's an alias?
[-]
Some carriers (Verizon Wireless usually) allow you to put an 'alias' on your mobile account. The alias is a name that you pick (like mikeyMotorcycle) that replaces your phone number when sending messages. When you do this, the messages show up in our system from your alias instead of your number, and we can't verify it is really you. In order to fix this, we have to run a quick verification process that links your alias to your phone number. It just takes a minute, and you only have to do it once.

Will I get billed for using WeTxt on my mobile phone bill?
[-]
No, WeTxt is a free service. You will not receive any extra charges for using WeTxt.
However, your carrier bills WeTxt messages the same as any other text message. You will be charged the standard text message rate for your mobile phone contract unless if you have a flat cost text message package with your carrier.

If I sign up for WeTxt will I start getting spam messages on my phone?
[-]
No. WeTxt is adamant about not allowing spam through its service. Spam on mobile phones could potentially destroy the market we are trying to cultivate. If you receive anything that you think is spam, you should report it through our Feedback Page
Additionally, please read our Policy Page to see our position on spam, and other potential abuses.
-
What does WeTxt do with the information that I provide?
[-]
Information that you provide to WeTxt is used in two ways.
- 1. To provide you with the full WeTxt service in the case of mobile number and email
- 2. To provide WeTxt, its partners, and its advertisers with an aggregate view of the WeTxt customer demographic. This information is only aggregate and is never linked directly to a specific person

What mobile providers does WeTxt work on?
[-]
WeTxt works on all major Tier 1 carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint-Nextel, and T-Mobile). It also works on a handful of smaller carriers, and MVNOs. The best way to find out is to try it and see.
If it doesn't seem to work with your service send us a note using our Feedback Page and we will try our best to get it working with your service too. Maybe you are the first person to ask!

I'm trying to use WeTxt but I am having problems. How do I get help?
[-]
We are here to help. Just tell us about your problem using the Feedback Page and we will do our best to help you. Make sure that you include some kind of contact information (email is best) so that we can get in touch with you.
-
Why do messages come to my phone like an email?
[-]
WeTxt uses your carrier's SMTP gateway to send and receive messages. What's an SMTP gateway? It basically means that we send and receive messages using email, but then they are translated into text messages to be sent to your phone.
Most services and most phones treat these types of messages almost identical to standard text messages however; there could be some variations depending on what service you use, and what type of phone you use.
If you are having problems, tell us about them.
